Clearly, Wall-e was one of the best movies of the year. You’ll find it at the top of some best of 2008 lists, including mine. But, unsurprisingly, it didn’t get nominated for best picture. It’s not a kiddie movie, but many, many people seem to reject outright for that reason.*
Can a movie win the big Oscar if it has any kiddie connection? Apparently not. I see nothing on the list, despite the ease with which any of us could come up with a list of Great kids movies: Babe, Pinocchio, Mary Poppins, Snow White, The Muppet Movie, The Wizard of Oz, Spirited Away and now Wall-e. (Not that any of those movies are really kiddie only.)
Just about anyone would choose these movies over some of the ho-hum forgettable stuff on the Oscar list.
*Another reason may be that it’s Science Fiction, another genre Oscar hates.
