New Kidlit-ish Movie Could Be BIG!

Hayao Miyazaki is the creator of Totoro and Spirited Away, two of my all-time favorite movies.

Miyazaki’s new movie is Hans Christian Andersen/Little Mermaid-inspired. But it doesn’t appear to about a mermaid and I’m 99% certain it does not include Buddy Hackett as a seagull. Miyazaki’s other western kidlit movie, “Howl’s Moving Castle,” did not live up to “Spirited Away,” to my mind. (Although the castle was amazing). But this sounds like a whole different sort of thing…

The movie is called “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea,” which suggests this exchange between me an a movie theater employee.

Me: “Two for Ponyo.”

Cahsier: “Do you mean ‘Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea?'”

Anyway, my “fear” here is that the movie will be so good that it will weaken Wall-E’s chances for Best Movie and maybe even Best Animated Movie.

Here’s a link to a Studio Ghibli image which was too big to put on my blog…
