Un-imagineering Winnie the Pooh part 2

I wrote recently about the idea of trying to take Pooh in a new direction or maybe an old direction. To free him basically from the current Disney Pooh. That’s not to say Disney hasn’t done some amazing things with Pooh — the songs, the story tweaks and the voice. It’s a wonderful voice.

But apparently it’s not Pooh’s voice.

Pooh’s voice is deeper, thicker, maybe dumber and in a thousand ineffable inflections, it’s just different. And, as for Piglet, he’s actually a pig who snorts.

Peter DennisThat is how Peter Dennis reads the stories on the Audiobooks and, as you may know, Christopher Robin Milne has given them the ultimate stamp of approval:

“if you want to meet the real Pooh, the bear I knew, the bear my father wrote about, listen to Peter.”

You can hear an excerpt instantly, here:

Every character’s voice is different than what we’ve grown accustomed to and the sum total of the differences is that the stories are different. It’s hard to say exactly how. But the result is a different sort of story and, of course, Dennis sticks to the script so there’s a gigantic difference.

I own the complete collection and, aside from some lenghty musical interludes between chapters(which may have been left over from audiotape days), it’s excellent.
